The deepwater rice farmer's year - 2 - a time to sow

In February or early March, the DWR seeds are sown, by the ancient method of broadcasting.

The field is ploughed to turn in the seeds, which await the Spring rains.

The Spring rains are rarely heavy but bring life to the DWR fields.

The young plants spring up.

If there is enough rain weeds can start to compete with the DWR. The farmer uses the "rake" to aerate the soil and reduce some of the weeds.

But then there is a drought - is this a disaster?
